Shanghai IKEA Cracks Down on Elderly Romance
By Lauren Hogan
The hotspot for getting hit on (if you're in the 60+ age bracket) is cracking down on rom-'antics'.
The Xuhui IKEA (yes, the furniture warehouse), is trying to regain control of their canteen from what has been, for several years, a 'matchmaking corner' for the elderly.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, single senior citizens have come in to meet friends and possibly even their match.
But after complaints from customers criticizing the 'vintage models' of occupying tables for excessive periods, talking too loudly, bringing their own food and even fighting, the store is cracking down with a new policy:
Order food first, then take a seat.
Shit. Just. Got. Real.
Quite a rude awakening after returning to your love nest from a pleasant National Week vacay, only to find the eating area railed off and staff hawking at you to place an order first before you could gain entry.
But it seems most are understanding of the new rule.
According to The Shanghai Daily, yesterday about 60 regulars accepting of the change, either stood around tables outside the eating area or bought food... some ordering 'a full meal', while others went for 'just the cheapest items on offer'.
As they say, love conquers all.
And on another positive note, sleeping on the furniture is still permitted.
